Starting Signal for the Salzkammergut Trophy

Austria’s biggest Mountain Bike Marathon from 11th until 13th of July 2014

With more than 4.500 participants from 40 nations the Salzkammergut Trophy is not only the biggest mountain bike marathon in Austria, but also ranks among the five biggest in Europe. About 15.000 spectators are ex-pected during the bike spectacle in the UNESCO World Heritage Region Hallstatt-Dachstein-Salzkammergut from July 11 until 13, 2014.

This year, after the European Masters 2002 and the World Championship 2004, the Salzkammergut Trophy 2014 will host another international competition. For the UEC Master European Mountainbike Championship all licensed bikers born 1984 or older are eligible to enter. The start of the women’s competition is in Obertraun competing in four categories on a 76,5 kilometer course with 2.446 meters altitude difference. In order to win the blue European Champion Jersey, the men will tackle more than 119,5 kilometer and 3,838 m altitude difference, classified in seven catego-ries.

Pros and hobby bikers together at the start
For the 600 toughest mountain bikers the 12th of July begins already at 05:00 am – the line up for the extreme distance at the market square of Bad Goisern. Incredible 211,3 kilometers and 7,049 m altitude difference – Europe’s toughest mountain bike marathon – need to be attacked. For this challenge hard-core pros have signed up – last years’ winners Luis Leão Pinto (POR) and Ondrej Fojtik (CZE) as well as Trophy Winner 2011 Wolf-gang Krenn from Liezen. But also local hero Bernhard Eisl from Abersee, who came in 4th place in 2013, wants to be part of the top group. Among the women, last years’ winner Katja Hentschel (GER) will tackle again the course.

Last year, ski jump legend Andi Goldberger has challenged and completed the extreme course. Participating in the Salzkammergut Trophy is not only for international top athletes a season highlight: besides the extreme course, seven different course 22,1; 37,9; 53,5; 76,5 and 119,5 kilometer as well as the „All-Mountain“ contest with 60,4 kilometers are ready to be tackled. This enables also hobby athletes to select their personal challenge according to physical fitness and training level experiencing the magic of the Salzkammergut tournament. A particular concern of the Trophy organi-zation team is to enthuse – especially rookies – about the marathon sport. So not only the wide range of courses, but also the time limits of the short distances have been set in such a way that a biker with less 10 km/h on the average still stays in the race. During the „Slow-Motion-Rating“ slowness is even an advantage!! After the winners’ ceremony non-cash prize worth 6.500 Euros will be raffled among the present bikers. Chances winning the main prize are therefore the same for everyone!

„Eliminator“ and „All-Mountain“
Among the seven loops leading through the picture-perfect landscape of the Salzkammergut, the 60,4 km “all mountain course” really stands out! The track is specially designed for the needs and capabilities of “fully bik-ers”. The 60,4 km course is technically challenging and includes, besides the three most difficult downhill parts of the extreme course, tricky trails. At the last years’ premiere of this challenge Karl Markt and Daniel Feder-spiel, both Tyrolean, tied for the first place. On July 11th, the day before the Trophy, spectators may already enjoy the spectacular “eliminator race”. Four bikers compete against each other in this knock-out race, the two fastest make it to the next round. The four best men and four best women fight for victory in the finals. Last year, Austrian Champion and World Cup Winner Daniel Federspiel won the first eliminator race in Bad Goisern.

Junior Trophy: juniors are you ready for the biking?!
On Sunday July 13, it’s time for our youngster! The ASVÖ-SCOTT Junior Trophy became more and more popular over the years and is in meantime Austria’s biggest “youngster race” with 400 kids and youngsters between three and fourteen! The start is in the center of Bad Goisern just like the “big ones”.
The courses are adjusted according to age groups and reach from 125 me-ters (U5) up to 9,6 kilometers (U15). After the race, every participant re-ceives a “gingerbread medal” and a Trophy T-shirt as a souvenir. After the winners’ ceremony there will be also a raffle with non-cash prizes – first prize a SCOTT Mountain Bike as well as a pair of Fischer Ski.

Dashing downhill on an unicycle
The Trophy weekend ends with a most spectacular event: 100 daredevils race down with a unicycle from the Mountain Hotel Predigstuhl into the valley towards Bad Goisern – 500 meter altitude difference! This downhill in Bad Goisern has become a highlight among the booming unicycle scene.
David Weichenberger (AUT) from Linz was the winner in 2013, being ahead of the current Unicycle World Champion Rulf Jakub (CZE).

Bike-Expo: Buy and test the latest bikes
Part of the Trophy weekend is a bike expo with more than 70 exhibitors, where mountain bike fans are able to test and shop the newest products and developments in the bike scene. Many stands offer special deals and sweepstakes, so be sure to check out the bike fair. The stands of Centurion, Conway, Cube, Genesis, Haibike, Nakita, SCOTT and Stevens offer the new-est bike models – mountain as well as e-bikes – to put to the acid test. On Saturday and Sunday, the best team mechanics are waiting at the service booths providing advices and assistance.
Numerous apparel companies will present their newest products at the bike fashion show www.trophy.at/expo

Ö3 Warm-Up-Party and helicopter sightseeing tours
Spectators who join the whole Trophy weekend in the Salzkammergut may expect a big-three-day bash. Already on Friday Ö3 – Austria’s biggest radio station – will turn up the party heat. From the sporty point of view: the Trophy will start on Friday with the „MTB Eliminator“, the main competi-tions on Saturday and the spectacular unicycle downhill on Sunday – enjoy a weekend with outstanding performances by athletes in front of a breath-taking landscape. On Saturday, after the winners’ ceremonies there will be a huge after-race party at the castle Neuwildenstein with DJ Mäd Mäxx until 03:00 am in the morning.

Selected visitor spots – like Hütteneckalm, the Rathlucka Lodge, in Lauffen, Weißenbach, Obertraun, Hallstatt and Gosau – offer the best insights dur-ing the race. A special highlight is the visitor’s spot on the Hallstätter Salz-berg. After eleven hairpin bends, the participants reach the historical Hall-statt burial grounds and the World’s oldest salt mine – now the steepest climb of the track with more than 30 % is coming up. In the last years this became often a key section regarding which biker carries off the extreme distance victory at the end of the day.

Engelbert Buttinger, an experienced host, will provide informative com-ments regarding the race. Download a reduced round trip fair for the Salz-berg cable car at www.trophy.at/salzbergbahn. However, the best view of the whole race track is still with a helicopter. Sightseeing and inspection flights are offered on Friday and Saturday – www.trophy.at/zuschauer.

The Salzkammergut – a holiday destination for bikers
With more than 4.500 athletes from all over the World participating in nu-merous contest and 15.000 visitors along the courses – the Salzkammergut Trophy has established itself in the top league within the mountain bike scene. The Holiday Region Dachstein-Salzkammergut benefits enormously: not only from the great number of additional overnight stays by partici-pants and fans, but also from the advertising impact of the event itself. With its 70 mountain bike routes with a total of 1.450 km, the Salzkam-mergut has become also a top holiday destination for bikers. The Dachstein Circuit – the regional flagship – leads in three legs around the highest mountain of Upper Austria offering three difficulty levels in blue, red and black. Therefore an internationally renowned event such as the Salzkam-mergut Trophy is image-wise the icing on the cake for the bike region Salz-kammergut.
